The Waiting Game

For fans as much as players, Major League Baseball?s showcase games have become tests of endurance. This is due in part to the attrition model of baseball favored by savvy, Moneyball-schooled ballclubs. Hitters take more pitches, which leads to more guys reaching base, which leads in turn to more pitching changes and throws over to first. At the same time, pitchers have taken to stalling their hearts out. Batters, too, call timeout after timeout, and the indulgent home-plate ump grants it every time. Add it all up, and you?ve hit the three-hour mark in the bottom of the sixth.

There's Nothing Necessarily Wrong With 'Flip-Flopping' (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | Attacking your political opponent as a "flip-flopper" has been in vogue ever since George Bush hammered John Kerry with such accusations in the 2004 presidential election. These days the term has been in the news more than ever, with Michele Bachmann accusing Herman Cain of flip-flopping, and with the Obama re-election campaign insinuating that Mitt Romney is a flip-flopper. However, criticizing a politician for changing their mind is often not warranted. It can actually be the smartest thing to do.

Indeed, adjusting your opinion based on the best available evidence at the time not only makes sense, it's also a sign of serious analytical thinking. For example, President Obama was criticized as an indecisive flip-flopper when he visited Iraq in 2008. Before the trip, he announced that he wanted to go there to make a "thorough assessment" of the situation, and said "I'm sure I'll have more information and continue to refine my policy." Obama should have received nothing but praise for wanting to make an informed decision, regardless of his ultimate conclusions about Iraq.

However, when an elected official changes their mind for pure political motives, then charges of flip-flopping can be appropriate. Mitt Romney, for instance, once expressed viewpoints far more liberal than his fellow Republicans. He opposed some tax cuts, supported abortion rights, and was a big proponent of universal health care. That was when he was governor of left-leaning Massachusetts. Now that he is running for president and trying to appeal to the entire GOP, he has backpedaled on almost all of his positions. You don't have to be a cynic to realize this is nothing but political opportunism by Romney.

Ideally, no one would think less of an elected official who changes their mind if they have good reason to do so. In fact, a politician who holds steadfast to an old belief when new evidence suggests they are wrong should be criticized more than a flip-flopping one. After all, what's the point of being consistent if you are consistently wrong? Let's hope the voting public stops paying attention to the "flip-flopper" label, and only starts caring about why a politician changes their mind.

T-Mobile Amaze 4G review

A great phone, for sure -- but is it amazing?

T-Mobile HTC Amaze 4G

A couple weeks into using the HTC Amaze 4G on T-Mobile, we've pretty much decided the most amazing thing about the device isn't the hardware, which of course is stellar. It's not the software, which is a further iteration of HTC Sense. These things are givens, right?

No, instead the most amazing thing about the HTC Amaze 4G is the fact that we're seeing it on T-Mobile at all, just a few months after its older brother, the HTC Sensation 4G, was released.

So what's different? What's new? is it truly amazing? Yes. And no.

The Good

Powerful hardware, and HTC Sense is as good as ever. The camera quality is much-improved, and the hardware shutter buttons and quick access to the camera app are must-haves.

The Bad

Could be too large for some people. The larger plastic battery cover is pretty slick in the hand. Earpiece is a lint trap. The camera app, while better, still have room for improvement.

Conclusion

Easily the best HTC Android smartphone on T-Mobile, with its current hardware and software. The camera is as good as any HTC has done of late. Makes us wonder, however, why T-Mobile's carrying the Amaze 4G as well as the only slightly older HTC Sensation.

London cathedral official quits over protest camp (AP)

LONDON ? The senior St. Paul's Cathedral priest who welcomed anti-capitalist demonstrators to camp outside the London landmark resigned Thursday, saying he feared moves to evict the protesters could end in violence.

Canon Chancellor Giles Fraser said on Twitter that "it is with great regret and sadness that I have handed in my notice at St. Paul's Cathedral."

He told The Guardian newspaper that he had resigned because he believed cathedral officials had "set on a course of action that could mean there will be violence in the name of the church."

Fraser's departure reveals divisions among cathedral clergy over how to handle the protest on their doorstep. Dean of St. Paul's Graeme Knowles confirmed Fraser had stepped down, saying officials were disappointed that he "is not able to continue to his work ... during these challenging days."

Protesters have been camped outside the building since Oct. 15. When police tried to move them the next day, Fraser said the demonstrators were welcome to stay and asked police officers to move instead.

He later issued a statement stressing that "the Christian gospel is profoundly committed to the needs of the poor and the dispossessed. Financial justice is a gospel imperative."

Days later, cathedral officials shut the building to the public, saying the campsite was a health and safety hazard. It was the first time the 300-year-old church, one of London's best-known buildings, had closed since World War II.

Cathedral officials, and the bishop of London, have since asked the demonstrators to leave, but they are refusing to go.

Knowles said Wednesday the cathedral was considering all its options in response to the protest ? including legal action.

But in a victory for the protesters, he said the cathedral hoped to reopen Friday following changes to the layout of tents.

In a statement, the Occupy London protesters called Fraser a "man of great personal integrity."

The protesters said Fraser had "ensured that St. Paul's could be a sanctuary for us and that no violence could take place against peaceful protesters with a legitimate cause challenging and tackling social and economic injustice in London, the U.K. and beyond."

Similar camps have sprung up across the United States and around the world since activists took over a plaza near New York's Wall Street last month to protest corporate greed and social inequality. Many have withered or been dismantled, sometimes by force.

The local governing authority for St. Paul's, the City of London Corporation, says it is taking legal advice on the best way to evict the protesters ? but that could be a long process, complicated by the tangled ownership of the medieval patch of London on which the cathedral stands.

The protesters say they will fight eviction and have hired high-profile lawyer John Cooper, who has said he will defend the group for free.

Fraser, 46, a high-profile and liberal Anglican clergyman, was appointed chancellor of the cathedral in 2009.

The role involves overseeing the work of the St. Paul's Institute, which "seeks to bring Christian ethics to bear on our understanding of finance and economics."

The cathedral and the protest tent city lie within London's traditional financial center, which is called the City.

Fraser, a former Vicar of Putney in south London whose father came from a prominent London Jewish family, is well known through his newspaper and magazine columns and frequent appearances on BBC radio.

He has criticized the effects of the government's austerity measures.

"Should the church get stuck into the mucky world of politics? How ridiculous, of course it should," he wrote in the Guardian in June, going on to quote the late Brazilian bishop Helder Camara: "When I give to the poor, they call me a saint. When I ask why they are poor, they call me a communist."

Armless archer setting world records

If you've ever wondered what determination looks like, take a good long stare at Matt Stutzman.

You wouldn't be the first.

Stutzman was born without arms, but he compensates with creativity and the will to succeed.

"Even at a young age, I remember always trying to do stuff and I'd ask for help with my parents and my parents would always tell me, in a nice way, 'Try to figure it out first before we help you,'" he says.

He turned his determination into success on the archery range.

Two years ago we figured out his unique release system.

Stutzman adjusts the bow with this toes, holds it with his right foot, and brings up the arrow with his left.

"My feet are my hands, so I just and hold it the same way they would with their hands," he explains.

Using a release aid, he hooks the string to his shoulder before taking aim and letting go.

He's vying for a spot on the 2012 US Paralympic Team.

In September Stutzman hit a shot from more than two football fields away.

230 yards to be exact, breaking a Guinness World Record for the longest shot on target.

It was 14 yards better than the old one set by a man who had both arms.

"I believe how I shoot is an advantage, because I use my leg and my leg is the strongest part of my body," he says.

Not counting his inner drive of course, which has him eyeing the able bodied competition with one ultimate goal.

"I want to be the best archer in the world...hands down...the best archer in the world," Stutzman says.

Dell Inspiron 14z (i14z-6677DBK)

The Dell Inspiron 14z (i14z-6677DBK) ($849.99 list) is the Staples configuration of another leading mainstream laptop, the Editors' Choice Dell Inspiron 14z (Core i5) ($750 direct, 4 stars). With the same thin chassis, the next iteration of the Core i5 processor, and a slightly longer battery life, the new Inspiron could be the next top mainstream laptop, but there are other excellent systems also vying for that title, like the Sony VAIO VPC-EG16FM ($829.99 list, 4 stars), which costs $20 less, but offers more in the way of wireless (WiMAX) and video-oriented (Blu-ray) features.

Design
The i14z-6677DBK features a thin, sleek design that dresses up a plastic chassis with cool brushed aluminum. The Dell weighs 5 pounds, the same as comparable laptops, like the Samsung QX411-W01UB ($699.99 list, 3.5 stars) (5 pounds) and Sony VAIO VPC-EG16FM (4.9 pounds). It's also quite stylish looking, with a dark brown finish covering the lid and palm rest.

The i14z-6677DBK's full-size keyboard is done in the chiclet style and offers one of the most comfortable typing experiences found on a 14-inch laptop, with subtlety sculpted keycaps providing a more finger-friendly surface than regular tile keys. It doesn't, however, have the handy backlight that was offered on the previous Dell 14z (Core i5). The accompanying trackpad is smooth and responsive, but the mouse buttons are a bit stiff. These sorts of details are highly subjective, however, so try before you buy.

The 14-inch widescreen display is quite bright, thanks to a white LED backlight, and sharp, with standard 1,366-by-768 resolution. You'll also find that the stereo speakers built in to the laptop deck sound crisp and clear, thanks largely to SRS Premium Sound software enhancement. The result is what Dell calls HD Sound 2.0, and it rivals HP's Beats Audio in quality.

Features
The i14z-6677DBK has plenty of features, but it tucks most of them out of sight behind protective covers. Open the cover on the right and you'll find two USB 3.0 ports and a headphone jack. On the left, the cover conceals a mini-DiplayPort, USB 2.0 port, and HDMI-out. Uncovered is an integrated media card reader (SD, MMC, MS/Pro). There's even a cover on the rear of the laptop, hiding the Gigabit Ethernet connection. These covers help keep dirt and grime out of the ports and help maintain the smooth uninterrupted lines of the laptop, but they are still an irritant that you'll be dealing with every time you need to plug in a mouse or USB drive.

The i14z-6677DBK has an HDMI port for connecting the laptop to the an HDTV to watch your videos; alternately, you can also you use the WiDi 2.0 feature, which lets you stream HD content to any TV equipped with a Netgear Push2TV adapter. It's not the only wireless solution included in the i14z-6677DBK; you also get 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The included dual-layer DVD burner is nice, but it can't quite match the Blu-ray drive found in the Sony VPC-EG16FM.

The i14z-6677DBK's 750GB 7,200rpm hard drive is larger than those of most leading mainstream laptops, like the Samsung QX411-W01UB and Sony VPC-EG16FM, which both have 640GB drives. On the hard drive, you'll find a bit of bloatware pre-installed, like Microsoft Office Starter 2010, a 60-day trial of McAfee Security Center, two ereaders (Blio and Zinio) and a handful of game samples from WildTangent.

Dell protects the i14z-6677DBK with a 1-year warranty covering parts and labor, but Staples buyers can take advantage of their 2-year extended protection plan. In addition to covering the laptop against the usual wear and tear, this service plan also includes 24/7 technical support and a free screen replacement?an expensive, but commonly needed, repair.

Performance
Dell Inspiron 14z (i14z-6677DBK) The i14z-6677DBK is equipped with a 2.4GHz Intel Core i5-2430M dual-core processor, one iteration removed from the processor found in the Dell 14z (Core i5). It's paired with 8GB of RAM. In PCMark 7 the i14z-6677DBK scored 2,622 points, putting ahead of the previous Dell model (2,308) and Samsung QX411-W01UB (2,296), which utilizes the same Core i5-2430M processor. In Cinebench R11.5, the system scored 2.69 points, just slightly behind the Samsung QX411-W01UB (2.71). In practical terms, performance was extremely close across the board. Similar results were seen in multimedia tests as well, where the i14z-6677DBK completed Handbrake in 2 minutes flat and Photoshop CS5 in 4 minutes 1 second. The leading scores in these tests go again to the Samsung QX411-W01UB, but by a razor-thin margin (1:53 in Handbrake, 4:00 in CS5). The Sony VPC-EG16FM was just as close (2:05 in Handbrake, 4:16 in CS5).

The i14z-6677DBK utilizes Intel's integrated graphics solution instead of a discrete graphics card, but the performance is still quite good, leading the pack with 3DMark 06 scores of 5,186 at medium settings and 2,833 at native resolution. In gaming tests it took the prize again, pumping out 19.9 frames per second in Crysis and 19.5fps in Lost Planet 2. That's good enough for moderate intensity 3D games at medium quality settings, and lighter 3D titles.

A large 65Wh battery pushes battery life close to 9 hours, lasting 8 hours 41 minutes in Mobile Mark 2007. It lasted long enough to outlast the previous Dell Inspiron 14z (8:38), and the Sony VPC-EG16FM (8:12). The only laptop to go longer was the Samsung QX411-W01UB, by a mere 17 minutes (8:58).

The Dell Inspiron 14z (i14z-6677DBK) has plenty in common with its Editors' Choice predecessor, the Dell Inspiron 14z (Core i5), like the latest Core i5 processor, a larger hard drive, and slightly better performance in gaming and multimedia, but it also retains some of its flaws, like stubborn mouse buttons and a irritating port covers. It makes a strong showing in its category, but other laptops like the Sony VAIO VPC-EG16FM add features like Blu-ray and WiMAX and cost less. For the time being, the previous Dell Inspiron 14z (Core i5) remains our Editors' Choice.

Google interest in Yahoo might be head fake

By Martha C. White

The battle for Yahoo is heating up.

When Jack Ma, chairman of Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba Group, announced last month that he wanted to buy Yahoo! ? which itself owns 40 percent of Alibaba ? he touched off a frenzy of tire-kicking by entities ranging from private equity firms to?Microsoft. Media outlets including the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal have cited unnamed sources who say Microsoft is in talks with a consortium of investors including private equity firm Silver Lake Partners, but it's not the only tech giant?eyeing Yahoo. Microsoft's archrival Google?also is reported by those same publications to be exploring strategic options, although the word at this point is unofficial and informal.

(Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBC Universal.)

Google doesn't actually want Yahoo, says Scott Kessler, Internet equity analyst at S&P Capital IQ. The company just doesn't want Microsoft, with its rival Bing search engine, to get its hands on any Yahoo assets that could threaten Google's search dominance.

"The fact that you have a player potentially like Microsoft means that Google at least needs to get involved at some level, if for no other reasons to know what's going on," he says. "Google is inclined to get involved because they're concerned about Microsoft having a place in this process and potentially having a lot to say about Yahoo's future."

Reports of Google's interest could?be a strategic advantage for Yahoo, since it would likely?drive up the eventual price. Of course, Google wouldn't mind driving up the price for any acquisition Microsoft might make.

Even if Google wanted to acquire any part of Yahoo outright, such a deal would be unlikely to?pass muster with antitrust regulators, analysts say. Google and Yahoo?tried to form an advertising partnership in 2008 and?abandoned the effort after getting strong signals that the Department of Justice would work to block?the deal. Regulators would be more likely to look favorably on a Yahoo-Microsoft partnership, which is what worries Google ? another reason for the company to get involved.

While Yahoo's content and user base might be an attractive addition to Google, which previously acquired YouTube, Kessler thinks it's unlikely that Google would try to buy Yahoo assets like Flickr on a piecemeal basis. Google's end game would be monetization of the user traffic via advertising sales, so a takeover of any part of Yahoo's core business would run into the same antitrust objections Google has experienced before, he said.

If Google does have a genuine interest in Yahoo, it has a couple of options. Google might view Yahoo's Alibaba connection as a way into the Asian market. "I could see a scenario where Google is maybe more interested in some of the other assets like the international investments in Japan and China," Kessler says. Despite a years-long, often politically fraught effort, Google has failed to establish much of a presence in China, so this could be an opportunity to grow there.

Ironically, Google does have a business interest in keeping Yahoo healthy. Like the Joker to Google's Batman, having a slightly less powerful rival establishes a kind of equilibrium. Kessler points out that when Apple was on the ropes shortly after reinstating Steve Jobs in what was viewed at the time as a last-ditch effort to turn the company around, Microsoft made a substantial investment in its smaller rival. Without Yahoo, Google would face even greater legal challenges to its market dominance.

The Tax Benefits of Investing In Gas and oil Wells are Considerable

In an make an effort to improve domestic oil and gas production in the usa Congress implemented tax benefits for the gas and oil investor, in the 1990 Tax Act. Primarily, the tax code claims that investing in an oil or gas well just isn?t a passive activity. And that ensures that the investor is entitled to use a number of different kinds of discounts to offset any income they might gain from her or his investment.

Drilling Fees ? Intangible

There are various drilling costs that can immediately be used as deductions. These types of tax benefits represent 60% to 80% of a well?s cost. The discounts are ordinarily taken through the same year that the intangible charges occurred. Some of such deductible charges are:

.labor
.drilling fluids
.rig time

Completion Expenses ? Intangible

These tax benefits work much like the intangible drilling prices. The represent around 15% of a well?s total cost. Most of the time, these breaks are taken during the same year that the fees occurred.

Devaluation

The tools and some of the material used in a drilling operation is salvageable, meaning it can be resold or reused. Nonetheless, through wear and tear, it loses a portion of its worth. In other words, its worth depreciates. Investors can receive tax benefits for the decreased value. A few of the items included are:

.pumping units
.casings
.tanks

Small Producer Tax Benefits

These tax benefits are incentives for small investors. They are also referred to as depletion allowance. Basically what it does is designate 15% of the revenues that?s made by a well as un-taxable. The main reason this is beneficial only to a small producer or investor is that firms generating more than 50,000 barrels a day are not eligible for it. In addition, investors that own more than 1000 barrels a day or 6,000,000 cubic feet of gas a day are also not permitted this bonus.

Lease Costs

Investors can receive deductions for leasing mineral rights and lease operating prices. In addition, they can also deduct any accounting costs, administrative charges, and legal charges which are incurred as a consequence of the lease. If the deduction is taken in the year that all these costs occur, they are 100% deductible.

The tax benefits that may be received from investing in gas and oil wells are important. Because so much of the initial investment cost is defrayed by the instant breaks investors can benefit of, there?s almost no risk capital involved. Just as in anything else, it is always a wise idea to check on with an expert before investing.

Turkey presses PKK hunt, Iran pledges cooperation (Reuters)

CUKURCA, Turkey (Reuters) ? Turkey and Iran pledged Friday to cooperate in the fight against Kurdish militants, as thousands of Turkish troops pressed ahead with an air and ground offensive for a third day following an attack that killed 24 Turkish soldiers.

The counter-insurgency operation against separatist fighters from the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) was concentrated on both sides of Turkey's border with northern Iraq.

Hundreds of Turkish soldiers were hunting PKK fighters around the Zab river areas a few kilometers inside Iraqi territory, security officials said.

Turkey's reaction to one of the most deadly attacks on its security forces in a conflict that began three decades ago has ignited speculation that Turkey could move to a full blown incursion to clear out PKK camps deeper inside northern Iraq.

The prospect would heighten risks in an already unstable region, with U.S. troops due to withdraw from Iraq this year, and neighboring Syria in the grip of a brutal repression against pro-democracy protesters.

Turkey, Iraq, Syria and Iran all have large ethnic Kurdish minorities, but the separatist struggle is fiercest in NATO member Turkey, where more than 40,000 people have been killed in the violence.

The neighborhood is rife with suspicions over who could be supporting the Kurdish militants.

Friday, Iran's Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi paid an unscheduled visit to Ankara to assure Turkey of Tehran's support, and to deny reports of suspected Iranian duplicity in the Turkish media.

At a joint news conference with Turkish counterpart, Ahmet Davutoglu, the Iranian minister said Kurdish militants were a common problem and the two countries should deepen cooperation against the PKK, and its Iranian offshoot, the Party of Free Life of Kurdistan, or PJAK.

"PKK and PJAK are common problems for Turkey and Iran, our determination continues, we should fight them with more serious coordination," Salehi said.

The Iranian minister described both the PKK and PJAK as "terrorist groups." The United States, European Union and Turkey have listed the PKK as a terrorist organization.

"Our common determination in fighting against PKK and PJAK will continue in the strongest way. We will work together in a common action plan until the area is completely free of the threat of terror," Davutoglu said.

It was unclear how Tehran and Ankara would work together. Until their relations soured in the past couple of years, Turkey and Israel had shared intelligence on regional security threats to their countries.

The Qandil mountains, on the Iraq-Iran border, are the main base of the PKK bases. Iranian forces have in the past shelled targets at Qandil.

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has signaled in the past Turkey could launch a joint operation with Iran against Kurdish militants' in northern Iraq.

The current theater of operations on the Zab river is further west than the Qandil mountains.

PLAYING DOWN CROSS-BORDER OPS

Friday, the Turkish military said most of the current operations were being carried out on the Turkish side of the border with Iraq.

"The large part of air and ground operations are carried out in the country, focusing mainly on the Cukurca area, and air and ground operations continue in a few areas of northern Iraq," the military said in a statement posted on its website.

The military has said it has put troops from 22 battalions into the field for ground attacks in five different areas on either side of the border, and has also launched air strikes.

A Reuters reporter in Cukurca, one of the districts in the southeast province of Hakkari where the militant attacks by the PKK took place, saw little military activity in the area, apart from warplanes flying at high altitude overhead.

Erdogan is under pressure to show decisive action after the latest killings. A full-blown Turkish military incursion into Iraq may assuage public anger, but would not deal a fatal blow to the rebels and could damage ties with Middle East neighbors.

Ties between Ankara and Tehran have come under strain after Turkey decided to host a radar system for a NATO missile shield program.

Turkey's increasing criticism of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's crackdown has also chilled ties.

Friday, Salehi and Davutoglu said relations between the two countries were in excellent shape.

In the past week, Turkish media has carried reports that Iran had captured the second in command of the PKK, Murat Karayilan, only to release him after Turkish air strikes on the base where the militant commander had been.

Salehi denied those reports.

"Murat Karayilan was never captured by Iranians," Salehi told reporters. "If we had caught him, we would have given him to our Turkish brothers. What interest could Iran have in capturing him and then releasing him? We don't have such a policy."

Treasury prices slip as stock market rallies (AP)

Treasury prices fell Friday after a series of strong corporate earnings reports set off a rally in the stock market.

Treasurys fell as several big U.S. companies reported strong third-quarter results. McDonald's Corp., Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. and Harman International Industries Inc. were among the companies that beat analysts' expectations.

Traders also appeared more optimistic that European leaders would make progress at meetings this weekend and next week toward resolving the Greek debt crisis. Stock markets in Europe and the U.S. rose sharply.

Traders sold Treasurys, pushing their prices lower and their yields higher. The price of the 10-year Treasury note was down 22 cents per $100 invested in late trading. It yield rose to 2.22 percent from 2.18 percent late Thursday.

The price of the 30-year bond fell $1.03, pushing its yield up to 3.27 percent from 3.20 percent.

The yield on the two-year Treasury note rose to 0.28 percent from 0.26 percent.

The three-month T-bill paid a yield of 0.01 percent, down from 0.02 percent late Thursday. Its discount wasn't available.

Is your son covered by your car insurance? | Bankrate.com

Tara Baukus MelloQuestionDear Driving for Dollars,
I have a car that is titled in my name. Is my son automatically covered by my car insurance?
-- Bill

AnswerDear Bill,
Maybe. It depends on a variety of factors. If your son lives under your roof, he typically needs to be named specifically on that policy, since it is assumed he'll have access to your car regularly.

If he lives elsewhere and is driving the car only when he's visiting, he may be covered by the liability portion of your policy, though perhaps with limits. It's also possible that he may not be covered at all under your policy. However, the liability coverage of his own policy may cover him while he's driving your car.

Damage to your car is most likely covered regardless of who is driving, assuming you have comprehensive and collision coverage. This type of coverage typically applies to the car itself.

Google's Ice Cream Sandwich Will Make Android All Better (The Atlantic Wire)

Alongside the new Galaxy Nexus phone, Google unveiled its latest: Ice Cream Sandwich. No, it's not a delectable summer treat, it's a jazzed up name for Google's latest Android update. All the tech bloggers are giddy over this Ice Cream Sandwich thingy. Why the fuss? Basically: Ice Cream Sandwich is supposed to make all of Android's problems go away.?

Related: Google Knows Something About the Danger of Email Archives

First, let's get this name thing straight. In laymen's terms Ice Cream Sandwich stands for Android 4.0. To sweeten up the boring tech speak, Google has used dessert related terms for each of its Android refreshes: Cupcake, donut, eclair, froyo, gingerbread--things like that. This time we have Ice Cream Sandwich. Yum. So next time you hear Google releases some mouthwatering edible, translate that to: New Android operating system.

Related: Survey: iPhone Could Gain on Android, BlackBerry Very Quickly

But why is this making tech bloggers' mouths water? Well, it should clean up Android's big mess. Ice Cream Sandwich is a combination of two previous updates: Honeycomb and Gingerbread, Google CEO Eric Schmidt explained at Mobile World Congress conference. Right now, there are a bunch of different OS's on all these different Google phones and tablets, and its an issue for app developers?explains PC Mag's Sacha Segan. "Currently, you get a choice between two kinds of tablets with Android: cheap tablets running an ugly, blown-up version of a phone OS designed for smaller screens, and higher-end tablets that lack apps because there's no obvious way to find Honeycomb tablet apps in the Android Market," he writes. By combining the two, Ice Cream Sandwich is supposed to fix all of that. Segan isn't too confident it will help things. "But Ice Cream Sandwich could make the split worse if updates to existing devices go as slowly as Android updates always have," he reasons. "That means we'll now have three major Android strains for developers to juggle."?

Who knows how things will really shake out, but beyond these developer perks, Ice Cream Sandwich has some cool phone related updates:

Related: Android's Browser Leaves the iPhone's in the Dust

  • Facial recognition unlocking. "You just have to face the Galaxy Nexus, hold still for a moment, and the phone unlocks itself right into the homescreen," explains This Is My Next's Vlad Savov.?
  • Screenshotting capabilities. "This one has been a long time coming," believes TechCrunch's Chris Velazco. "Hold down the power button and the volume down button to snap a screenshot."
  • Customizable dock.?
  • Better notifications and widgets.
  • Android Beam: Google's version of "Bump," explains Gizmodo's Whitson Gordon. "You can send articles, maps, or even Market links from one phone to another just by opening it up on one phone and touching the two together, back-to-back," he adds.?
  • Less physical buttons. "You?ll find three software menu keys ? Back, Home, and Recent Apps, a trifecta that should be familiar to Honeycomb users ? adorning the bottom of the large display and replacing the formerly necessary physical or capacitive touch buttons," continues Savov.?
Ice Cream Sandwich is only available on the Galaxy Nexus for now. But HTC is mulling the upgrade, and other Android phones will likely have it on their freshest offerings sometime soon.?

Vivint Solar Announces $75m Partnership With U.S. Bancorp, Expansion Into Three New Markets

vivint-solar1"If they're [the solar panels] not producing energy, you're not paying for it." That was Vivint CEO, Todd Peterson on Vivint Solar, the company's latest attempt at bringing renewable energy to consumers in a disruptive fashion. Through Vivint Solar, customers do not have to pay anything up front for solar power. They simply sign a contract, allow Vivint to strategically place solar panels on their roof and then buy the produced energy at a locked-in rate 20-30% below that of the local utility company. And again, if it happens to be an unusually cloudy summer, you don't take a loss since you didn't pay anything up front. Vivint Solar is announcing today a partnership with U.S. Bancorp that will allow the company to expand from its initial test market. A $75 million renewable energy tax equity fronted by U.S. Bancorp will help fund residential solar energy systems in the new markets of Utah, Hawaii and New York. But don't worry. Vivint is working hard at expanding nationwide.

Romney speech touts ability, as video rips Perry's

Republican presidential candidate former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney speaks during a Republican presidential debate Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2011, in Las Vegas. (AP Photo/Chris Carlson)

(AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said Wednesday America can only overcome its economic woes with a leader who "knows how to lead," on the same day he released a scathing Web video calling into question rival Rick Perry's readiness to be president.

Romney's speech to the Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce banquet in South Dakota was upbeat and patriotic, a sharp turn from the GOP presidential debate in Las Vegas Tuesday, when Perry and Romney tangled over policy, but also over integrity and honesty.

But the former Massachusetts governor closed his 20-minute talk with a theme now emerging in the increasingly bitter campaign against Perry, his top rival for the nomination.

"The great challenges we have we will overcome," Romney told the audience of about 2,000 at the Sioux Falls convention center, "if we have leaders that will tell the truth, and live with integrity, and who, by virtue of their life experience, know how to lead."

It was a far cry from the pointed accusations Romney and Perry traded during the Tuesday debate.

The squabbling began over the substance of economic development and immigration.

But the back-and-forth devolved into both men, at times, shouting over each other and glaring at each other. Perry, the governor of Texas, questioned Romney's integrity and Romney suggested Perry lacked the temperament to be civil.

Romney's new Web video knits together clips of Perry's recent debates, where he stumbles over his words and at times struggles to make his point. It includes commentary from pundits critiquing Perry, with the final frame including the words, "Rick Perry: Ready to Lead?"

Romney was on his way east after the debate, headlining the dinner and also raising money for his campaign. He attended a private fundraiser in Sioux Falls Wednesday hosted by South Dakota meatpacking company owner Eldon Roth, a donor to Romney's 2008 presidential campaign who has contributed roughly $160,000 to Republican campaigns in the past decade.

Romney planned to spend Thursday campaigning in nearby western Iowa. Having kept a low profile in the leadoff caucus state since finishing a disappointing second four years ago, Romney has gradually stepped up his campaign in Iowa.

Romney plans to headline a town hall meeting in Sioux City and meet with business leaders in Council Bluffs.

It is Romney's first stop in Iowa in more than two months, but comes as the campaign is entering a critical phase.

None of Romney's more socially conservative rivals have established a clear edge with less than three months until the Jan. 3 caucuses. Romney meanwhile is stressing his background as an investment company executive in an appeal to economic conservatives, hoping for a surprise showing in the caucuses.

G20 Finance Chiefs Back Europe Bank Rescue - Money News Story ...

Finance ministers from the world's largest economies pledged Saturday to take "all necessary actions" to stabilize global financial markets and ensure that banks are well capitalized."We will ensure that banks are adequately capitalized and have sufficient access to funding to deal with the current crisis," the Group of 20 finance ministers said in a statement issued after a two-day meeting in Paris. The meeting comes as officials in Europe move closer to an agreement on a comprehensive plan to secure the banking system and resolve Europe's long-standing sovereign debt problems. The plan, outlined by European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso last week, will be discussed in detail at a meeting being held by the European Council in Brussels on Oct. 23."We heard encouraging things from our European colleagues in Paris about a new comprehensive plan to deal with the crisis on the continent," said U.S. Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner in a statement.Geithner added that European leaders "clearly have more work to do on the strategy and the details."But he sounded optimistic about the support the plan has received from Europe's two largest economies. "When France and Germany agree on a plan together and decide to act, big things are possible," he said.European leaders have been under pressure to decisively resolve the debt crisis in Greece and increase the firepower of a recently overhauled bailout fund to provide a stronger "backstop" for other euro area nations struggling with unsustainable levels of debt, such as Italy and Spain. The 27-nation European Union has also been grappling with the threat of a banking crisis, amid fears in financial markets that banks do not have enough capital to withstand the shock of a contagious sovereign debt crisis. The G20 ministers welcomed the recently approved overhaul of the European Financial Stability Facility, which now has power to intervene in the sovereign debt market and loan money to governments that need to recapitalize banks. The EFSF is still widely seen as needing additional "leverage" to address both the sovereign debt and banking crisis simultaneously.EU officials are expected to discuss ways to give the ?440 billion fund greater "firepower" at a meeting later this month, but increasing the amount of money the fund controls has been ruled out."We look forward to further work to maximize the impact of the EFSF in order to avoid contagion, and to the outcome of the European Council on October 23 to decisively address the current challenges through a comprehensive plan," the G20 communiqu? read. The "comprehensive plan" is expected to be formally presented early next month when the G20 heads of state meet in Cannes, France. Meanwhile, the G20 also said it made progress on an "action plan" to address problems in the global economy and help boost growth. The ministers said developed economies must continue to reduce debts and deficits, while taking steps to spur economic growth.Emerging economies need to address risks such as inflation and capital imbalances, the G20 said, adding that developing nations with export-driven economies need to stimulate domestic consumption. The G20 said it is taking "concrete steps" to strengthen the international monetary system, including the management of capital flows and exchange rates. The ministers also mwelcomed new surveillance powers by the International Monetary Fund, but the statement seemed to suggest that the G20 expects more from the multinational lending institution."We committed that the IMF must have adequate resources to fulfill its systemic responsibilities and look forward to a discussion of this in Cannes," the G20 said.Geithner said in his statement that the IMF has a "substantial arsenal of financial resources" that can be used to "supplement" Europe's comprehensive plan. But he added that the IMF resources would be used "alongside a more substantial commitment of European resources." The G20 also pledged to continue working on plans to strengthen the global financial system and contain the risks posed by financial institutions that are deemed too-big-to-fail.The G20 consists of large, industrialized economies such as the United States, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and Canada. It also includes emerging economic powers China, India, Brazil and Russia.

Monday morning(ish) KO: Kimbo Slice?s boxing win

Though most of the boxing world was focused on Bernard Hopkins this weekend, former UFC heavyweight Kimbo Slice had his second boxing match this weekend. It didn't take long.

In just 47 seconds, he took out Tay Bledsoe, a tall cruiserweight whose record is now 2-4. With two wins now under his belt in the ring, is Slice a full-fledged boxer, or is he still a former mixed martial artist who is now trying boxing? Tell us in the comments or on Facebook.

Dell Inspiron One 2305 (IO2305-4400ELS)

The Dell Inspiron One 2305 (IO2305-4400ELS) ($799.95 at Best Buy), a touch-screen all-in-one desktop, is a case of adequacy in action. TheIO2305-4400ELS is sufficiently fast for today's PC consumer, has a few neat features like a touch screen and multi-monitor capabilities, and comes at a good price. It's like a warm but out-of-fashion coat?you'll get great use of it before it wears out, but it won't really draw any attention to itself either.

Design and Features
On the outside, the Inspiron One 2305 (IO2305-4400ELS) looks like the other Insprion One systems we've seen in the past, like the Dell Inspiron One 2305 (IO2305-3114MSL) ($849.99 list, 2.5 stars) and Dell Inspiron One 2305 (IO2305-4429MSL) ($849.99 list, 4 stars). All three have the same 23-inch, 1,920-by-1,080 (1080p) resolution screen, wireless connectivity, and touch-screen capability. All three are more all-in-one PC than touch-screen PC, due to the upright position of the screen. The system can't tilt back far enough to make it easy to use for extended periods of time, like the HP TouchSmart 610-1150y ($1,199.99 list, 4.5 stars). Having your arm stretched straight out to work the touch screen will get very tiring very quickly. Think of the touch screen as a "once in a while" convenience rather than a full-time interface, like on a tablet.

Dell's Stage touch interface doesn't help. It's easy to bring up a program or function with a quick tap of a finger on the screen, but aside from photo and video viewing, Stage doesn't really offer the kind of user interface (UI) that you see on systems like the HP TouchSmart 610-1150y. The HP TouchSmart interface has a fully-functional desktop UI that lies on top of Windows 7 that creates a seamless experience when navigating through your apps. Furthermore, the HP 610-1150y's tilting screen and superior ergonomics simply makes the touch experience better. However, if you're one of the few out there with a Dell Streak 5 or Streak 7 tablet, you can use the tablet to view shared content from the Inspiron One 2305.

The Inspiron One 2305 (IO2305-4400ELS) has six USB 2.0 ports, the usual audio and Ethernet ports, and a VGA-out port. The system lacks a few niceties, like HDMI-in (so you can hook up a cable box, laptop, or game console), eSATA or USB 3.0 (for faster hard drive data transfers), or Blu-ray (for HD movies). You will be able to get HD videos and downloads off of the Internet via services like YouTube, Amazon, and Netflix. The desktop comes with a wireless keyboard and mouse with a USB receiver for both, but the keyboard is a little cheaper than the one we saw on previous models, which had more multimedia keys and a rotary controller for volume. The Inspiron One has a label touting its JBL speakers: While they were fairly loud, the speakers definitely distorted at full volume?a deal-breaker for those who like to turn the volume up while working or playing. The test unit came with VGA-out port, which allows you to hook up a second screen for multi-monitor displays. That second screen likely won't have touch-screen capabilities, but having two screens is nice for multitasking.

The Dell IO2305-4400ELS comes with just a little more bloatware than the previous iteration. It has several icons dropped on the initial desktop screen and in the Start menu, including Blio (ebook store), Roxio SyncUp (a PC-to-PC file sync service with cloud storage), and McAfee Internet Security (with only 30-days of updates). Another new utility is Intel's WiDi 2.0 technology, which lets you hook your PC up to display on any HDMI-capable display like an HDTV. You will, however, need to buy Netgear's Push2TV receiver (a $99 option), which has to be tethered to the HDTV at all times. The system's 1TB, 7,200rpm hard drive is capacious, though 1TB drives are becoming commonplace on new PCs.

Best Buy also has an extended warranty program, which adds a year to the standard one year warranty offered by most manufacturers. There are two plans in this extended warranty program. The standard plan ($119.99) covers the system against normal wear and tear, power surge damage, and includes a "No Lemon" guarantee in which Best Buy will simply replace the computer if it requires more than four repairs during the coverage period. Best Buy's advanced plan ($219.99) offers all this, and also covers the system against accidental damage from drops and spills.

Performance
Dell Inspiron One 2305 (IO2305-4400ELS) The Inspiron One 2305 (IO2305-4400ELS) comes with a dual-core Intel Core i3-2100 processor and 4GB of memory, which is adequate for day- to-day functions and is certainly fast enough to display 1080p HD videos from the Internet. Otherwise, it's a middle-of-the-road performer, gaining a 1 minute 47 second time on our Handbrake video encoder test, and 3:54 on our Photoshop CS5 test. It also received a decent, if unremarkable, 2,331 point score on the PCMark 7 test. Let's just say the desktop will last you a few years before it starts to seem slow. The slightly more expensive Samsung Series 7 (DP700A3B-A01) ($999.99 list, 4 stars) is a bit slower (2:05 Handbrake, 4:31 CS5) due to its slower Intel Core i3-2120T processor. However, the Samsung DP700A3B-A01 is a match for the Inspiron One 2305 (IO2305-4400ELS) in day-to-day tasks.

The Dell Inspiron One 2305 (IO2305-4400ELS) is a decent all-in-one desktop overall, but unless you're a diehard Dell fan, other systems will outshine it. For example, the Sony VAIO VPC-L222FX/B ($999.99 list, 3 stars), though more expensive, is both more attractive and more feature-laden, with components like the USB 3.0 port, HDMI in/out ports, and smooth touch-screen experience. Heck, even the previous Inspiron One 2305 (IO2305-4429MSL) had Blu-ray, HDMI, and a TV tuner for only $50 more. All-in-one desktops like the Editors' Choice HP TouchSmart 610-1150y and Sony VPC-L222FX/B call attention to their touch screens and make the case for the added expense. Think of the Inspiron One 2305 (IO2305-4400ELS) as a decently priced all in one PC that just happens to have a touch screen.
