'The Artist' aims to bring silence back to Oscars

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Meryl Streep might join the acting three-peat club with a third Academy Award. Jean Dujardin could become the first Frenchman to win best actor. Christopher Plummer is in line to become the oldest acting winner ever at 82.

And "The Artist" is favored to become the only silent movie to take the best-picture prize since the first Oscar ceremony 83 years ago.

Along with Streep, Hollywood's big night on Sunday has plenty of returning stars, too, with past Oscar winners and nominees such as George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Glenn Close, Michelle Williams and Nick Nolte in the running again.

The show also has a returning favorite as ringmaster: After an eight-year absence, Billy Crystal is back for his ninth time as host.

Because of a change in voting rules, the Oscars feature nine best-picture nominees for the first time, instead of the 10 they had the last two years.

Competing against "The Artist" for the top honor are Clooney's family drama "The Descendants"; the Deep South tale "The Help," featuring best-actress nominee Viola Davis and supporting-actress favorite Octavia Spencer; and the Paris adventure "Hugo," from director Martin Scorsese.

Also in the lineup: the romantic fantasy "Midnight in Paris," from writer-director Woody Allen; Pitt's baseball tale "Moneyball" and his family saga "The Tree of Life"; the World War I epic "War Horse," directed by Steven Spielberg; and Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock's Sept. 11 story "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close."

Spencer's a virtual lock for supporting actress, having dominated earlier film honors for her breakout role in "The Help" as a brash maid in 1960s Mississippi. The same holds true for Plummer, the front-runner for supporting actor for his role as an elderly widower who comes out as gay in "Beginners."

The lead-acting categories are where the drama lies. Best actress shapes up as a two-woman race between Davis as a courageous maid leading an effort to reveal the hardships of black housekeepers' lives in "The Help" and Streep as British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady."

The record-holder with 17 acting nominations, Streep has won twice and would become only the fifth performer to receive three Oscars. Jack Nicholson, Ingrid Bergman and Walter Brennan all earned three, while Katharine Hepburn won four.

It's been almost three decades since Streep last received an Oscar, for 1982's "Sophie's Choice." Though she has the most acting nominations, she also has the most losses ? 14. Another loss would be her 13th in a row.

Best actor also looks like a two-person contest between Clooney as the distressed patriarch of a Hawaiian clan in "The Descendants" and Dujardin as a silent-era superstar whose career tanks as talking pictures take over in "The Artist."

It would be the second Oscar for Clooney, who won the supporting-actor prize for 2005's "Syriana." While French actresses have won before, among them Marion Cotillard and Juliette Binoche, Dujardin would be the first actor from France to receive an Oscar.

Dujardin was picked as best actor Saturday at the Spirit Awards honoring independent film, where "The Artist" ruled with four prizes, including best picture and director for Michel Hazanavicius, who is favored for the same trophy at the Oscars.

"The Artist" has dominated Hollywood honors this season, winning key prizes at the Golden Globes and awards shows held by the Directors, Producers and Screen Actors guilds.

"This means a lot, because it's a small movie. It's not expensive. We did it with small money," Hazanavicius said backstage at the Spirit Awards. "And it's black and white and silent."

If "The Artist" comes away with the best-picture trophy, it would be the first win for a silent film since the war story "Wings" was named outstanding picture at the inaugural Oscars in 1929.

The 84th Academy Awards show begins at 8:30 p.m. EST, broadcast live on ABC from the Hollywood & Highland Center in Los Angeles.

South Africa pull off heist to win series

Jesse Ryder, who made his return after a calf injury, scored a typically meaty half-century to take New Zealand to the brink. He slowed down as he approached his fifty and looked to bring it up - and the win closer - with an adventurous shot against Johan Botha. With New Zealand requiring eight, he walked across his stumps to scoop over fine leg but was caught by Morne Morkel on the edge of the circle. That meant the 19th over had cost just three runs and left New Zealand with a new batsman at the crease with seven needed of the last over.

The equation changed and four were required of the final delivery but Tim Southee's swing found only fresh air as de Lange held his nerve to bowl full outside off. And so he had inflicted an unlikely defeat on an opposition, the type of which has so often been experienced by South Africa.

De Lange's performance turned around a largely uninspired performance from the rest of the seamers, who veered too often on the leg-side line. It was up to Botha, who was his usual wily, miserly self, to apply the brakes after New Zealand's openers were off to a speedy start - Rob Nicol and Martin Guptill shared a stand of 65 in six overs. Nicol regularly took the ball from outside off and planted on the leg side but, eventually, he did that one too many times and was caught in the deep.

With Guptill also falling for a misjudged aerial shot, the stage was set for Ryder to take New Zealand home. He started with a streaky boundary off a thick outside edge that flew through the vacant second slip area but then he pulled, charged down the track to loft and slapped through the offside with his usual power. His display of disdain put pressure on South Africa, who made careless errors in the field, dropped him once and sent down 12 wides.

Despite the visitors lapses, New Zealand committed even more with bat in hand. Brendon McCullum swung at a short ball and was caught behind and Kane Williamson had no control over a shot he skied to mid-wicket. It left the middle-order with too much to do after a controlled performance from New Zealand in the field should have been enough to win them the match.

They struck three times in the first eight overs to remove Richard Levi, makeshift No.3 Albie Morkel and Amla. de Villiers and Duminy built a partnership in the old-fashioned way, taking two overs to establish themselves before Duminy struck a glorious, high-elbowed six into the stands.

The pair had found good rhythm when Duminy was run out by Nicol against the run of play, backing up too far at the non-striker's end. Nicol had created an opening and he prised it apart even further in the next over. He bowled de Villiers when the South Africa captain missed a slog-sweep and struck Justin Ontong on the thigh to have him out lbw. The wickets forced South Africa to slow down and allowed Bracewell and Southee to put together a string of ten dot balls that ended with the wicket of Johan Botha - a one-handed snatch out of the sky by Martin Guptill.

Wayne Parnell and Robin Peterson rallied to take 27 runs off the last three overs but South Africa still ended up with a total that would take a disciplined effort, or a few moments of magic, to defend. Between Botha and de Lange, they provided enough of that.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) ? The Oracle of Omaha earned his nickname ? and more than a few billion dollars ? by spotting investments that others overlooked, but Warren Buffett makes mistakes.

No, really, he does.

Just pick through Buffett's annual letters to shareholders of his conglomerate, Berkshire Hathaway. His pronouncements are eagerly anticipated by investors around the world. But sometimes even the Oracle gets it wrong.

By the second page of this year's letter, released Saturday, Buffett was borrowing a tennis term to take credit for "a major unforced error" he'd made on some Texas utility bonds.

Of course, Buffett's shareholder letters are filled with a lot more good decisions than bad ones. His $44 billion fortune attests to that. But the blunders are instructive. Or at least remind us that he's human.

The plainspoken, no-nonsense investor tends to be a good sport about his mistakes. Here are some of the lowlights.

HOUSING HOROSCOPE

The blunder: Buffett predicted in last year's letter that the U.S. housing recovery would begin within the next year and help fuel economic growth.

The explanation: Buffett doesn't mince words and says he was "dead wrong" about this one. But he says basic biology makes it unavoidable that the country will need more houses.

The quip: "People may postpone hitching up during uncertain times, but eventually hormones take over. And while 'doubling up' may be the initial reaction of some during a recession, living with in-laws can quickly lose its allure."

ENERGY ERROR

The blunder: Buffett spent about $2 billion buying bonds offered by Texas utility Energy Future Holdings. But those bonds are now worth about $878 million, and he conceded Saturday that even that could be wiped out.

The explanation: Buffett comes right out and admits misjudging the company's prospects and the likelihood that natural gas prices would remain depressed.

The quip: "However things turn out, I totally miscalculated the gain/loss probabilities when I purchased the bonds. In tennis parlance, this was a major unforced error by your chairman."

ACQUISITION ANGST

The blunder: Some of the companies Berkshire Hathaway has bought don't add much to the company's bottom line. Buffett didn't single out the laggards in Berkshire's manufacturing, service and retail unit, but he acknowledged that a few produce poor returns.

The explanation: Buffett says he misjudged some of these businesses before Berkshire bought them partly because he didn't always listen to curmudgeonly Vice Chairman Charlie Munger.

The quip: "I try to look out 10 or 20 years when making an acquisition, but sometimes my eyesight has been poor. Charlie's has been better; he voted 'no' more than 'present' on several of my errant purchases."

OIL OOPS

The blunder: In 2008, Buffett more than quadrupled Berkshire's stake in ConocoPhillips when oil and gas prices were near their peak. It cost the company several billion dollars.

The explanation: Buffett said he didn't anticipate the dramatic fall in energy prices that happened later in 2008.

The quip: "During 2008 I did some dumb things in investments. I made at least one major mistake of commission and several lesser ones that also hurt."

TEXTILE TROUBLE

The blunder: Buffett has said that buying Berkshire Hathaway itself may have been his worst investment decision. It was a struggling New England textile mill when Buffett bought into it in the 1960s. He kept the mill running for 20 years before shutting it down.

The quip: "The dumbest thing I could have done was to pursue 'opportunities' to improve and expand the existing textile operation ? so for years that's exactly what I did," he said last year. Most people will eat what is put in front of them, regardless of the amount.

The biggest problem (pun intended) in this country right now is the large soft drink. An 8oz. soft drink has roughly 100 calories. That is more than enough considering that there is no nutritional value whatsoever, meaning that your body does not effectively use any of the ingredients in that drink to maintain your health and give you strength. So, it may taste good but you are not doing yourself any favors. Now, imagine multiplying that by 8. 800 calories is what you get in a big gulp type drink from your local convenience store. This is a huge problem. Please discourage your kids from purchasing these drinks.

There is a wonderful product on the market now. It is a reusable water bottle with a built in filter system.?There are several manufacturers. I think we have found them at Target. ?Your kid can carry it to school and refill at the drinking fountain. By the way: 64 oz of water = 0 calories. Today?s recipe is another simple dish and is a ?small plate?. Scallops are expensive per pound, but because they are so rich, one really only needs a few to really enjoy their sweet, incredible taste. As with most seafood, the less you do the more the flavor comes out. Right now is a great time for scallops. We had them last night and they were fantastic. It?s important to fill your plate with vegetables to make a complete meal. Last night our dinner was perfect. We had these scallops, along with arugula salad and sauteed large asparagus. We drizzled some of the sauce from the scallops over the asparagus as well, tying the whole meal together.

Serves 2

Ingredients

4-6 Scallops
1 Lemon
2 Pats of Butter
Really Good Sea Salt and Pepper
Olive Oil
Balsamic Vinegar

Tools

Saut? Pan with Cover
Tongs

Squeeze the juice of one lemon over the scallops, drizzle with a little olive oil and lightly salt and pepper.
Let sit for 10-20 minutes. Not long, as the acid from the lemon will start to cook them.
Melt the butter in the pan over medium heat.
Add the scallops and cook for five minutes per side, covering while cooking the first side.
Remove scallops from the pan and add about 2 tablespoons of balsamic vinegar (less if it is really old and sweet). Let the sauce thicken for about another minute.

Pour Sauce over scallop and whatever else is on your plate.
