Things I've Learned in 11 Years of Marriage - The Rebel Chick

Today is my 11 year anniversary?

Honestly, sometimes it feels like we?ve been married forever and other days, it feels like I just met my husband last week.

While our marriage is not perfect by any means, it is pretty damn awesome and I am proud of what we?ve been able to accomplish together over the last decade. We?ve seen couples meet and break up, friends get married and divorced, and that we?ve somehow managed to not become one of those divorce statistics sometimes surprises me!

I?d be lying if I said that our marriage has never had problems. Anyone who?s been together for a lengthy amount of time knows that like all relationships, marriage is really hard work.

So, what?s my secret?

Sheer determination.?

No, seriously. When we?ve hit a rough patch, we didn?t give up. When my husband and I were at odds, grew bored, or just plain old got stuck in a rut, we didn?t accept it as the end of our relationship. We saw it as a phase in our relationship. When we took those marriage vows, we meant them, and we never lost sight of that commitment.

While there are many reasons why relationships don?t work out ? lying, cheating, addictions, betrayal ? those haven?t been our issues. We have faced the normal, everyday issues that I think are just as dangerous to a marriage, as they can lead the way to those issues.

I wanted to share a few of the lessons I?ve learned in these past 11 years of marriage?

1. Accept that people change over time.

It seems that I am always hearing people complain that their significant other has changed since they met, since they got married, since they had children, etc. I think it?s unrealistic to think that the person you marry will stay exactly the same for the rest of their lives. When I met my husband, he enjoyed going out, but as he?s gotten older, he no longer enjoys being a night owl. Sure, he does the occasional happy hour or birthday party ? but he?s really a bit of a homebody.

I had a hard time with it at first, but then I slowly got used to it. I still go out on occasion with the girls, but I learned to make peace with the fact that our partying life was over. Instead of fighting that change, when I saw that it wasn?t doing any good, I accepted it.

Now?when my friends call at 9 to ask me to come out with them, I laugh, because I?m already in my pajamas!

And I?ve changed as well ? probably even more than my husband! While I was once that workaholic who spent 50+ hours in the office, climbing the corporate ladder, I?m now a housewife ? and my husband completely supported that decision and happily absorbed 100% of the financial responsibility for our family.

2. Never take your significant other for granted.

It can be too easy to lose appreciation for someone when they?ve been around for a long time. I?ve heard the complaint so often: ?They take me for granted? and I?ve experienced that myself. It?s never fun to realize that the most important person in your life doesn?t appreciate your awesomeness.

How do you avoid that? Honestly, I?m not quite sure.

I think that you have to make a conscious decision to appreciate your significant other on a daily basis.

If you don?t think your spouse is doing anything fantastic for you, think again. Do they go to work every day to earn an income to support your family? Well, that?s pretty damn awesome. Does your spouse offer to make dinner when you?ve had a busy day? That?s pretty kick ass.

If you think your spouse doesn?t appreciate you, TELL THEM. About 5 years into our marriage, I felt unappreciated and taken for granted. We had long talks about it, and I realized that he DID appreciate me, he just felt that we were past the point that he needed to tell me. He thought I knew. I needed verbal affirmations to feel loved and appreciated and once I explained my feelings, he did a much better job of making me feel special and important on a regular basis. And honestly, I was guilty as well, he just wasn?t verbal about it. He made me realize that I was so busy feeling unappreciated that I stopped telling him how much I appreciated him.

3. Nothing is as important as communication.?

Honesty is the key to a successful marriage. I think honesty is the most important thing ? every problem can be avoided, or fixed, with honesty.?When we have had issues in our marriage, it was open and honest communication that has rectified the situation.

Around the 7 year mark, we went through that phase in our marriage where we began growing apart. We married at 23 and 24, and by the time we hit 30, we were different people. I felt it, he felt it, and for a while, neither of us wanted to address it. We pretended like it wasn?t happening, hoping that it would go away and that the situation would fix itself.

It didn?t.

Once we were honest and talked about how we felt, we realized that we needed a break. We needed to get away from our jobs, leave our daughter at home with grandma, and go off and reconnect. We took a week-long vacation in Western North Carolina ? in a remote area in the mountains with no one else around, no internet, no cell phone, no cable?and we just spent an entire week together.

If we had not been honest with each other about what was happening, our marriage would have been doomed.

4. Make time for each other.?

Once my husband and I took that vacation together, we realized that we hadn?t been spending any time together. We were always together, but never alone ? and this is a problem that most parents face.

We take regular vacations together now, aside from our family vacations. We do date nights without my daughter. When she goes off to visit her grandparents and aunts and uncles, we take full advantage of that time and go to the movies, go out to eat ? the point is, we do activities together. Just us, no friends, no coworkers, no family ? we just concentrate on each other.

If you aren?t able to have babysitters, go meet your spouse for lunch during the workday. Even if you can only manage it once a month, it will make a difference.

?

I realize that this isn?t your usual ?It?s my anniversary!!? blog post?but whenever I tell people how long I?ve been married, they are always shocked because frankly, most marriages don?t last this long anymore.

Do you have any pointers for couples on how to make their relationship last? I?d love to hear them!

Review - Total Food Geeks Edinburgh

Sunshine and showers, a classic theme of this summer almost made me wilt, I mean, being Italian I am used to proper summer weather and this year this was amiss? never mind, I was able to find some warmth and sun (plate sized!) in a corner of Easter Road, about 6/7 minutes on foot from the London Road, at Al Dente. Graziano Spano is the chef/proprietor of this small gem, tucked in toward the stadium, and really treats his customers like stars, yet also as good friends.

Charmed by his front of the house staff, I made my way to my table and spread my newspaper while sipping on good House wine (really nice and refreshing Verduzzo!) and perusing the menu which is surprisingly wide and a mixture of dishes from various regional areas. The starters range from vegetable bruschetta to figs wrapped in Parma ham to mussels cooked with a hint of orange (and they do smell like that, I assure you, since the people next to me ordered them!) and also comprise traditional fare of ravioli and less conventional combinations, like finocchi (fennel bulbs) au gratin, but Italian style.

First courses of pasta are especially inviting? I was drawn as a good veggie toward the gnocchi with asparagus and courgettes which populate a very veggie friendly list (also containing cannelloni and radicchio and mushroom sformato), but then went for an off carte?will tell you later. Non veggies, you are going to be pampered! Paccheri al branzino (a type of white fish), risotto with squid ink and salmon tagliatelle with rucola, as well as the ever perfect pescatora pasta will delight fish lovers, whereas those more attracted to meat will be happy tasting the lasagna.
The main courses are especially interesting and bear witness to Graziano?s love for Italian regional cookery: again, fish is a real main stay of his offering, and I suppose that it is not a surprise since he?s from a great harbour city, Bari. Swordfish (pesce spada), branzino and merluzzo (small cod) feature in surprising and attractive settings of vegetables and herbs; however, I think Graziano deserves great praise for bringing agnello (lamb) alla Romana (roman style) to his guests! Rome is my city as you know, and to see this, well it just delights my heart? not to mention seeing it coming out of the kitchen?looked like my Mum?s offering, freshly made and cooked on the spot, a real marvel!

Coming to me? after much mulling, I must confess I went for simple things, vegetable bruschette, two topped with tomatoes and garlic and one each topped with roasted aubergine and cannellini beans were my starter which I truly enjoyed and then here it comes, proof that this is THE place for fine, yet fresh and unpretentious and really authentic Italian cookery? a really amazing plate of penne arrabbiata, a perfect balance of chilli, garlic and a light sautee of onion and tomato. I really cherished this plate of pasta, and I know it may seem simple, too simple, but hey?I think it really shows the wholesome nature of Al Dente. The pasta was perfectly cooked and the sauce finely balanced.
I was stuffed by the end of this but incredibly happy and ready to close the evening with a small glass of limoncello, a real treat!

What else to add? I am a Roman lass and please do take my word for it?Al Dente is the real thing, freshly made, on the spot and genuine Italian cooking served in cosy and lovely surroundings. Graziano was very hospitable and came for a chat: he said that the premises had always been a restaurant and it was only fitting that Easter Road should retain them as such, in my mind. He sources his produce carefully in Granton and Musselburgh and has his suppliers for all these delicacies that we Italians cannot live without too :-) .

I left Al Dente reluctantly, as the last orders were coming out? with a heart filled with sunshine as well as with a fine meal. I really hope that you Edinburgh dwellers out there will give Al Dente a try?as I said, a corner of Italy on Easter Road? what else can you ask for?

ECB chief Draghi vows total support for euro

European Central Bank chief Mario Draghi vowed unconditional support for the beleaguered euro Thursday, sending markets into orbit as traders eyed further action from the bank to shore up the eurozone.

In apparently unscripted comments in London, the normally reserved Draghi said his institution was "ready to do whatever it takes to preserve the euro. And believe me it will be enough."

Stressing that the euro was "irreversible", Draghi said that part of his bank's remit was to keep sovereign debt levels under control when they hampered the proper functioning of interest rate policy.

Analysts saw Draghi's comment as a hint the ECB could soon reintroduce its hotly contested programme of buying up the bonds of struggling eurozone countries that has lain dormant for several months.

As Spanish borrowing costs soared over seven percent earlier this week -- the level that forced Ireland, Portugal and Greece into bailouts -- the bank has come under increasing pressure to restart the programme.

And Draghi's hints had an immediate impact on borrowing costs, with Spain's shooting below the seven-percent mark and Italian costs plummeting to just above six percent.

The comments also sent stock markets into euphoric mood and boosted the euro on the foreign exchange markets after several days of painful declines amid fresh speculation the eurozone might implode or Spain might need a bailout.

ABN Amro economist Nick Kounis said that Draghi had "opened the door for a restart of the central bank's government bond purchase programme", untapped since February.

"The crisis response looks likely to focus on direct intervention in the government bond market," he added.

And CMC Markets analyst Michael Hewson told AFP that Draghi's remarks "suggest that the ECB may well do something about capping rising bond yields."

Attention would now turn to Draghi's monthly news conference in Frankfurt next Thursday "to see if he means what he says," the analyst added.

Since the eurozone sovereign debt crisis erupted more than two and a half years ago, the ECB has won praise as the only European institution that has acted quickly and decisively to stem the turmoil.

It has cut interest rates to a record low level of 0.75 percent and flooded banks with more than one trillion euros ($1.22 trillion) of ultra-cheap loans in a bid to stimulate lending and get the economy moving again.

ECB officials have never ceased to repeat that such measures are only temporary and merely meant to buy time for governments to tackle the root causes of the crisis -- profligate spending.

Draghi insisted again in his London speech that the ECB did not want to "supplement actions that have to be taken by governments."

"That is not our job," he insisted.

But the central bank chief did praise efforts taken by EU leaders to fight the flames saying that "progress has been extraordinary in the last six months".

Meanwhile, another top European official was on his way to Greece, the birthplace of the eurozone crisis, as the International Monetary Fund said talks with Athens over its bailout programme would last into September.

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso flew to Athens to meet Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras as finance ministry officials unveiled a list of spending cuts worth some 11.6 billion euros.

The spending cuts, reportedly to come largely from pensions, health care and benefits, are designed to help Greece negotiate a longer fiscal overhaul to cope with a deep recession, a finance ministry official said.

Auditors from the IMF, the European Union and the ECB are in Athens to judge Greece's progress towards making economic reforms seen as vital to haul the debt-wracked country out of a crippling depression.

The audit report will determine whether Greece will receive a 31.5-billion-euro tranche from a EU-IMF loan programme it desperately needs to keep the economy afloat.

British PM 'middle of nowhere' comment elicits jab

(AP) ? Mitt Romney jabbed. British Prime Minister David Cameron countered. Salt Lake City's mayor hit back.

Ah, let the games begin. No, not the much-anticipated 2012 Olympics, but an across-the-pond kerfuffle between London, the host city, and Salt Lake City, the home of the 2002 Winter Olympics.

It began with the suggestion from presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney, who led the Utah games, that British officials might not be prepared to pull off a successful Olympics.

The remark sparked sharp responses from Britain's top officials, including Cameron, who said it was easier to hold an Olympics in the "middle of nowhere." That "middle of nowhere" seemed a reference to Salt Lake City.

Enter the city's mayor, Ralph Becker, whose office noted Friday that officials in Utah would gladly educate Cameron on all Salt Lake City has to offer, even providing a map "so he doesn't run into any trouble locating the middle of nowhere."

"We'd welcome the opportunity to share all that we enjoy here with the PM, including a great number of assets that you'd be hard-pressed to find in London," said the mayor's spokesman, Art Raymond.

Raymond pointed to world-class outdoor recreation, a resilient and prospering economy, one of the best-educated populations in the world and a rare sense of community.

Romney's political career was born from his leading role in organizing the 2002 games, which were plagued by scandal before he was tapped to take over. His remarks about London's readiness drew the ire of residents across the United Kingdom.

Cameron said: "We are holding an Olympic Games in one of the busiest, most active, bustling cities anywhere in the world. Of course, it's easier if you hold an Olympic Games in the middle of nowhere."

The British news media also weighed in, lampooning Romney at that start of his trip to meet foreign leaders.

"Who invited party-pooper Romney?" the Daily Mail quipped. "Nowhere Man" declared the more reserved Times of London. "Mitt the Twit" screamed The Sun's headline.

Cameron said Romney and others would "see beyond doubt that Britain can deliver."

Back in Utah, Becker's office paid no mind to Romney's comment, which the former Massachusetts governor walked back on Friday, saying "it looks to me like London is ready."

Locked-out NY power workers charge utility with safety risks

(Reuters) - Locked-out New York power workers charged on Wednesday that the safety of the electricity system in America's largest city was being compromised by managers and substitute crews brought in to do emergency maintenance work.

Consolidated Edison denied the accusation, saying the city had survived heat of over 100 degrees F (38 degrees Celsius) this month without major loss of electricity.

"We are responding to emergencies, the lights are on," John Miksad, ConEd's Senior Vice President of Electric Operations told a joint committee of the New York State Assembly.

"The stock market is open, the subways are running and hospitals are performing their critical functions," he said. "It's summer in the city and air conditioners are humming. New York City is open for business."

Miksad said the company bore a responsibility to the city of over 8 million people, "that we are continuing to meet even under the present circumstances."

The Utilities Workers Union of America (UWUA) called for the hearing of the Assembly's energy and labor committees, saying health and safety were at risk since the company locked out 8,000 workers on July 1 when labor contract talks broke down.

ConEd has trained managers to carry out essential maintenance work on the system and has also brought in non-union workers from other states. There have been some isolated incidents in which managers have been burned doing emergency repairs.

"We submitted photographs into evidence showing managers not wearing the required safety equipment," said union spokesman John Melia. "ConEd has an untrained workforce doing our jobs and that is resulting in unsafe conditions."

Two weeks ago, the union called on state regulators to order ConEd to end its lockout, charging the company was violating regulatory obligations to provide a safe and reliable service.

The New York State Public Service Commission (PSC), which regulates power companies in the state, is reviewing its options after hearing from both sides.

Asked what the Assembly could do, the union's Melia said it might take legislative action or call on the PSC to intervene.

ConEd's Miksad said there were three heat waves in July and last Wednesday set a peak electricity delivery record for 2012.

"Severe thunderstorms, hail, and winds in excess of 50 miles an hour broke last week's heat, but caused thousands to lose power," he said. "In less than 24 hours, we had everyone's power restored."

Meanwhile, negotiators for both sides sat down for talks on Wednesday. A major sticking point, besides wages and health care costs, has been ConEd's move to phase out defined pensions.

Miksad did not detail the talks during his testimony to the Assembly hearing, but said the dispute could be settled quickly if the union agreed to give notice of a strike.

"A simple signature by union leaders, agreeing to a 72-hour notice before calling a strike, is the only thing that stands between getting 8,000 people off picket lines and back on the job," he said.

Rival PNG prime ministers join forces to form new government

PORT MORESBY (Reuters) - Papua New Guinea's rival prime ministers have ended a political feud that left the resource-rich country with two leaders for the most of the past year, joining forces to form a government in a surprise twist to the South Pacific nation's elections.

The peace deal means incumbent Prime Minister Peter O'Neill is most likely to head the new government and form a coalition after a prolonged national election in the often volatile country, with backing from rival Michael Somare.

"I want to take this opportunity to thank our founding father of our country, Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare, for joining us, making sure that we provide a government that is truly deserving for Papua New Guinea with all the stability that it deserves," O'Neill said.

The result, if endorsed by parliament next week, should bring a new level of political stability to the nation of around 6.5 million people after a tumultuous year.

Despite its mineral wealth, successive governments have been unable to deliver infrastructure or services to the people, with around 80 percent of the population living on subsistence village farming and small cash crops.

PNG is the home to a $15.7 billion Exxon Mobil gas export project, and the giant OK Tedi copper mine which began production in 1987, as well as the Frieda River copper project, run by Swiss-based global miner Xstrata.

Exxon's LNG project is expected to start production in 2014 and boost GDP by about 20 percent.

Somare, the elder statesman of South Pacific politics at 76 and the country's first prime minister in 1975 after independence from Australia, re-contested his seat despite being gravely ill for much of 2011.

His ill health sparked the feud. O'Neill was voted in as prime minister after Somare was ruled ineligible due to his prolonged absence from parliament.

While O'Neill had the support of parliament, the Supreme Court twice ruled that Somare was legitimate prime minister, leaving the country with rival leaders.

The election, which dragged on for more than a month, was praised by observers as being "largely peaceful", despite reports of sporadic violence.

Other failings included bribery, widespread delays and anomalies in polling, destruction of ballot boxes, and discrimination against women, the Commonwealth Observer Group said in an interim report into the election earlier this month.

The final makeup of the 111-seat parliament should be clear by Friday, when official results are declared.

More than 3,400 candidates from 46 political parties contested the poll, where around half of the country's lawmakers have so far lost their seats.

To form a government, a leader must cobble together a coalition of at least 56 lawmakers during the post-election horse-trading, with the prime minister directly elected by a vote in parliament, which is due to meet by August 3.

How a Dentist Can Create an Effective Internship Program

Some people see interns as college students who are only good for getting coffee and completing a host of other mundane and insignificant tasks. This is especially true when it comes to working for big corporations, doctors or lawyers. This isn?t to say that this perception is necessarily true. However, this is the way these students are portrayed on movies, television shows and even some novels. Because this is the way they are portrayed, some business owners tend to believe that they are only good for these types of tasks. The good news is that this doesn?t have to be the case. If you are a dentist, for example, there are several things you can do to create an effective internship program that can help your business and make an impact on your interns.

For instance, you could allow your interns to assist you while you work on a patient. Of course, they shouldn?t be doing anything that requires them to actually perform dental work. However, they could hand you certain items or even prepare each room before you go in. These things may not seem very important, but at least it allows the student to be around you while you perform your work. So, they will get to witness firsthand, the daily duties of a dentist.

Another thing you could allow your interns to do is set appointments. Although you most likely have a receptionist, this idea could still work. It would free up your staff member?s time. This will allow them to focus on other tasks. If there aren?t many other tasks that need to be handled at that time, it will at least give them a much needed break.

Not only does allowing interns to set appointments help the receptionist, but it will benefit them as well. This will allow them to see all of the things that go into running this type of establishment. It?s about more than just working on people?s teeth. However, there are a lot of behind the scenes activities that must also be taken care of.

Lastly, interns can also work directly with patients and visitors by holding short workshops during business hours. You could allow them to set up a small table in a corner of the office. The intern would hand out the information to visitors and talk with them about different ways they could improve their dental lifestyle. Hiring Caregivers in Crete, IL: The Importance of Safety When Hiring a

At some point in time, many adults will find themselves in the position of hiring a caregiver for an aging parent or other senior family member. The easiest way to find a caregiver is via personal recommendation from a trusted party or by sifting through the classified ads on sites such as Craigslist. While some money and time may be saved by using this method, it is not wisest choice in the long term.

The biggest issue in hiring independently? is liability.

The family will literally become the employer and as such would be responsible for any medical and disability expenses the cargiver might incur. People who work freelance in the caregiving industry also tend to leave it very quickly and move on, which could create a difficult situation for the family involved. Most of all, it is more difficult to know what the person?s background actually is, and hiring an independent caregiver is taking a big chance on safety.

Peace of Mind

Hiring through a home care agency will bring peace of mind by knowing details such as witholding, taxes and insurance are taken care of. Agencies can also perform thorough background checks as well as drug testing, and only hire dedicated people who are qualified to do the job. When all of this is factored in, the cost is roughly the same as an independent hire.

Training and Monitoring

A caregiver who works through an agency is trained in first aid techniques and CPR and is also insured and bonded. That person must follow rules and a code of ethics set by the agency. If a CNA is working in a home, that person may be checked up on regularly by a nurse to ensure everything is being done properly.

The Right Caregiver for the Job

A home care agency also offers the choice of different caregiving personnel so if one is not quite the right fit, another person may be substituted. Another advantage is always having someone available to step in if the regular caregiver becomes ill or cannot work for some other reason. The family can avoid the panic of calling around for a replacement and possibly missing work or school if one cannot be found.

When it comes to a beloved senior, the safety and reliability of a home care agency is the best way to go.

When researching options for?caregivers in Crete IL, home care counselors at Home Helpers?are available to talk with you about your caregivers?needs including how to reduce?caregiver?stress while providing better, affordable care. We are an?elder care?agency providing caregivers?in Crete, IL.

Washington history museum plans DB Cooper exhibit

LONGVIEW, Wash. (AP) ? The Washington State History Museum in Tacoma plans to open an exhibit in August of next year on the D.B. Cooper skyjacking mystery.

State Historical Society Director Jennifer Kilmer tells The Daily News (http://is.gd/PkXK5o) it's part of an emphasis on more contemporary events.

A man identifying himself as Dan Cooper hijacked a Portland to Seattle flight in November 1971. He picked up $200,000 in ransom money in Seattle and took off for Mexico, then parachuted somewhere over southwest Washington. The skyjacking remains unsolved, but some of the marked $20 bills he was given were found in 1980 along the Columbia River.

The exhibit will include some of the money. It also will illustrate features of an old Boeing 727 that have been changed in modern planes to prevent skyjackings.

At a California church, a sort of holy war

A battle has broken out between two factions within the St. Mary of the Angels Anglican Church in Los Feliz. The debate revolves around Father Christopher Kelley, pictured June 20, 2012, with one group backing him, and the other wants him out. Both groups are occupying different floors of the church and embroiled in an ongoing legal battle. (Michael Robinson Chavez/Los Angeles Times/MCT)

Michael Robinson Chavez, Mct

LOS ANGELES ? Under the glimmer of a fingernail moon, Christopher Kelley tiptoed toward a two-story, Spanish Mission-style building in Los Feliz. He and his crew were jittery. What if a security guard spotted them?

A few blocks away, late-night revelers mingled in trendy bars. But Kelley's target was dark and hushed ? exactly as he wanted.

The building's front door was protected by a padlocked, wrought-iron gate. So the crew crept around back, sidestepping a few jugs of rainwater and a tomato plant. They strained to hear whether anyone had followed them.

Nothing.

Then a locksmith pried open the door.

Motion-sensitive lights flickered on. Kelley felt a rush of joy. For the first time in weeks, the priest was back inside his church.

St. Mary of the Angels is an Anglican parish embroiled in an odd sort of holy war.

On one side are the Rev. Kelley and his supporters, who say their rivals are resisting the parish's efforts to join the Roman Catholic Church. On the other: parishioners and Anglican authorities who accused Kelley of wrongdoing, took him to court, ran him out of the church and changed the locks.

Church quarrels are frequently decided in courtrooms, particularly when property is involved. A few years back, the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles took a dispute with a breakaway parish all the way to the California Supreme Court.

But the St. Mary's saga is notable for its viciousness. The church has perhaps 60 members, and the bickering among them has been marked by incendiary accusations and screaming matches that often end with "God is on our side!" The parish itself became such a battleground that for a time community groups were shooed out and services canceled.

"Never in the annals of church history has it gone down quite like this," said Canon Anthony Morello of the Anglican Church in America, which has sided with the group trying to oust Kelley.

Kelley arrived as parish priest in 2007, having been chosen by St. Mary's elected board of directors. Now 65, he is white-haired, blue-eyed, slight in build. He speaks in a soft, somewhat grandfatherly tone.

"He was just so pleasant," said former board member Keith Kang, now a leader of the rival faction.

EDITORIAL: Why Athletics is Not Popular in the Philippines? ? Pinoy ...

EDITORIAL: Why Athletics is Not Popular in the Philippines?

Basketball, Boxing, Billiards, Volleyball, and Football. Expect those sports are the major content of sports pages among mainstream media outfits in the Philippines. As an Athletics enthusiast, I need to check different sources in order to check what is the latest news and information about Track and Field. Being one of the oldest sports in human history and the centerpiece event in the Olympic Games, we may wonder why Athletics is not popular in the Philippines.

Market-driven media hegemony

Media outfits in the likes of ABS-CBN, AKTV and GMA are only covering sports with enough mass appeal. Since they are private companies, they have one thing in their mind: Profit. They only air sports that get the most number of sponsors. Because of their influence among sporting fans, they confine the audience with limited choices and put other sports in the last line. Another theory is how Cultural hegemony of the United States affect our choice on what sport should we follow. Philippines become a basketball fanatic nation because the US introduced us to that sport. Since it the mainstream sports are the ones always seen in media, we can expect people will not be interested in watching or even trying sports like Athletics.

Of course media being also a source of entertainment will bank on sports with athletes with ?pleasing personality?. Having a media set-up which is entwined to entertainment industry, we see most of the athletes that mainstream follow suits to the standard of what is beautiful to a common Filipino: model material ?artistahin? etc. Since in Athletics, there is not much ?artistahin? we can expect private mainstream media not to bank after them unless they win a big competition overseas.

Compared with the set-up of media in other countries, state-run stations cover mostly big events with track and field as main preference. Japan has NHK, UK has BBC, and China has CCTV. If our government enable our state-run station, People?s Television Network to expand its capabilities and if possible beefed up with more funds, we may expect more coverage for track and field. Another example is how there is no live coverage for Palarong Pambansa even it is esteemed as the National games of the Philippines. Ironic isn?t it?

Another factor is that the current media set up lacks a true Athletics analyst. There are no Dyan Castillejo, Qunito Henson, Ronnie Nathanielsz and TJ Manotoc who can explain and analyze the sport to common people. I remember during the Sydney 2000 coverage of PTV, Mr. Freddie Abando become the athletics reporter even he is a news reporter. The mainstream media sports setup doesn?t breed new sportscasters who can be expert in Athletics.

No new sporting heroes

Although our current national athletes are winning in some events overseas, they still can?t equate the likes of Lydia De Vega, Elma Muros, Isidro del Prado etc. Because there are no athletes breaking through major athletics tournaments for the past 6-7 years, we can expect that people will not look much for them. Still our national athletes are doing their best, still we need a new talent to emerge and serve as the face of the sport to gain public attention.

Conservatism in the Athletics National Sport Association (NSA)

Compared with other Athletics Associations of most high performing countries, most of them had a true and working website where all news, events and records are disclosed to the public. With the popularity of social networking sites, we may think that Athletics in the Philippines may get popular and more transparent. Yet due to the inaccessibility of records in real time and the lack of a centralized resource hub for Athletics records and news, questions about the validity of records hound the NSA for PHI Athletics. If only the NSA will maximize the use of social media and have a true media bureau desk among their ranks, chances of informing people about athletics will be much better. Make the most out of everything.

Education of athletes and coaches should be done as well. It should not be only about doing academics but doing research to innovative ways in training and performance. UP CHK for example is doing different studies in relation with athletic training and yet only few collaborate to the college to consult their training methods if it is in synch with existing studies in Athletics. As we always said, those you learn during your athletic years are not the same on what should be done now. In common sense, experience is not always the gold standard; education, competence and track record should be.

To top all of this, the NSA should do something and convene all stakeholders in Philippine Athletics. There is should be no room for factionalism or secrecy among its ranks. Open records to anyone who want to check it out. It creates a room of trust and confidence especially among sponsors who want to help Philippine athletics. All sides must be heard and collective statement and actions must be raised. Unity among diversity is the key to success.

There are a lot of things to make Athletics a sport of choice among the Filipinos. We must think for the betterment of the nation because its citizens pay taxes to develop our sport. Innovation, transparency and continuous strive for excellence should be always the core values of any discipline. Trust builds confidence, confidence creates relationships, and relationships create new things. Should we begin now?

Baseball and softball bodies unite in effort to boost Olympic pitch

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) voted to throw the two sports off the Olympic programme in July 2005, and the last appearance of baseball and softball at the Games was at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. As separate bids, the two sports then failed to make it onto the programme of the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

The IOC will vote on one new sport for the 2020 Olympic programme in September 2013. Baseball and softball are up against karate, roller sports, sports climbing, squash, wakeboard and wushu, with the heads of the two governing bodies united in their belief that a merger will help boost their prospects. The new federation is set to be provisionally named the International Baseball and Softball Federation.

?We feel if we can work together it might be much more possible to regain Olympic status,? ISF president Don Porter told Reuters on Sunday. ?Both our sports are trying to find things that will improve them. Become more attractive and interesting.?

IBAF president, Riccardo Fraccari, added: ?We decided to join into one federation. There has been unanimity in this. At our congress in Dallas there was unanimity. All professional groups are participating in this. The decision by the IOC to take us off the Olympic Programme obviously disappointed us but we learned a lot. We looked into the reasons why and we addressed them.?

Looking For Whitsundays Sailing Tours | Fashion and Lifestyle ...

When you are trying to break away from the routine 9-5 grind and have a holiday coming up you might consider looking at the various Whitsunday sailing tours. There are many great tours that are available and if you do some research on the opportunities you will be able to really have a great time without overspending.

Something that you should do is list all of the firms that are offering these sailing tours and visit their website. What you are looking for is information about the size of the tour groups and the list of activities. This is of particular importance since there are some packages that are geared towards the more adventurous personalities while others are intended for people who are more laid back.

You need to find out all you can about the company that is providing the tours to figure out which one is the best. It might be helpful to read over the testimonials that have been posted by other clients of the tour company. The feedback that is provided will really help you make a determination on who you should use. Since your holidays are precious you need to take proactive steps to ensure that the package you select is the best one for you and your needs.

Canon Pixma PRO-1

The Canon Pixma PRO-1 ($1,000 street) is Canon?s new flagship A3+ photo printer, capable of producing high-quality prints at up to 13 by 19 inches. It is a step up from the Canon Pixma Pro9500 Mark II ($849.99 direct, 4 stars), employing more and larger ink tanks and clocking faster photo-printing speeds. In my testing, this massive printer consistently delivered magnificent, gallery-quality prints, and did particularly well in printing monochrome images and ones with very dark backgrounds.

The Pixma PRO-1 measures 9.5 by 18.2 by 27.4 inches and weighs 61 pounds. Although large and heavy, it's not unattractive, with a matte-black finish and rounded corners. It has only 3 buttons: On, Cancel/Resume, and a button to open the ink compartment. The PRO-1 can print on cut paper sheets up to 13 by 19 inches. It has a rear tray that fits up to 150 sheets, as well as a single-sheet manual feeder, also in back, that supports thicker paper. In addition, it can print on optical discs, using an included tray.

The PRO-1 sports a whopping 12 ink tanks, each with more than twice the volume and a lower cost per milliliter than one of the Mark II's 10 ink tanks. Five of the PRO-1's ink tanks are black or shades of gray; not surprisingly, in my testing the PRO-1 did particularly well in rendering black and near-black shades. The tanks are located in two compartments, one on either side of the output tray. (It's easy to know if the tanks are seated correctly, because each tank has a light on top that will go in when properly installed, and will blink when the tank is drained.)

Colors for the pigment inks include red; yellow; cyan; magenta; photo cyan; photo magenta; matte black; photo black; light gray; gray; dark gray. The twelfth tank is a Chroma Optimizer, a coating that according to Canon covers the bumps between ink droplets to achieve uniform glossiness in dark areas and smooth tonal gradation in colors, increasing the color gamut.

Each of the ink tanks has a 36ml capacity, and Canon sells them for $35.99 each for an even $1 per milliliter. (The Chroma Optimizer tank costs slightly less, $29.99 for the same capacity.) This compares with $1.14 per ml for the Pixma Pro9500 Mark II?s smaller (14ml) tanks, and $1.21 per ml for the Editors' Choice Epson Stylus Photo R3000 ?($849 direct, 4.5 stars), whose 8 ink tanks each have a 25.9-ml capacity. ?

However, cost per ink volume may not translate directly into cost per print, for which neither Canon nor Epson give a figure (and which would be tricky to quantify for printers with so many ink tanks, as it largely depends on what's being printed). Also, Canon doesn't give a rated duty cycle for the PRO-1, so there's no way of knowing how much you can print per month without shortening the life of the printer.

Canon has geared the PRO-1 to professional photographers, but it's also suitable for photo enthusiasts (in which category I number myself) who want to get the best out of their photos?particularly ones who do a lot of black-and-white printing. It's less expensive than most DSLRs, and it's easy to set up and use; the trickiest thing about it may be finding a place to fit its hulking frame.

The Canon Pixma PRO-1 offers USB and Ethernet connectivity, whereas the Pro9500 Mark II is limited to USB connectivity. The Editors' Choice Epson Stylus Photo R3000 ($849 direct, 4.5 stars) can connect via USB, Ethernet, or WiFi.

Canon Pixma PRO-1

Printing Speed, Text, and Graphics
Print quality is paramount for this class of photo printer, but photo printing speed is also important, especially to a busy pro. In our testing using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing, the PRO-1 took an average of 2 minutes 14 seconds to print out a 4-by-6 photo, faster than the Pixma Pro9500 Mark II's 2:35 but much slower than the Epson Stylus Photo R3000's average of 53 seconds per 4-by-6 print. In fact, the R3000's average of 1 minute 41 seconds per 8-by-10 print is actually faster than it took for the PRO-1 to print out a 4-by-6. The PRO-1 averaged 3 minutes 53 seconds per 8-by-10, a step up from the Pro9500's 4:31.

Using a near-dedicated photo printer like the PRO-1 to print text documents is a bit like using a Maserati for grocery runs, but it still prints out excellent text for an inkjet, easily good enough for elegant documents like resumes or for basic marketing materials. Its graphics are also above par, suitable for marketing materials; the worst I could say about them is that some backgrounds could have been darker and some thin, colored lines bolder.

Photo Quality
Photos, of course, are this machine's raison d'etre, and in printing them out the PRO-1 excels. Print quality is exquisite, perhaps the best I've seen on an inkjet. Our monochrome test print was tint-less, with great contrast and a smooth, even background. With other prints, colors seemed true, and the printer did well in capturing subtle gradations in skin tones. There were no flaws worth mention.

In addition to our normal test suite, I printed out some ad-hoc 13-by-19-inch images on Canon's semi-gloss paper with the PRO-1. I shoot a lot of night scenes and have a particular interest in astrophotography, and photos of the night sky proved a perfect venue for testing its ability to handle black and near-black shades. I was particularly impressed with its ability to print even, dark shades with uniform ink density. (It seems that the Chroma Optimizer was working as billed, not to mention the five black or gray ink tanks.)

The near-dedicated photo printers from Canon and Epson both produce magnificent prints, though they have slightly different qualities, and those in the market for a professional-grade photo printer will want to compare output from models from each brand to see which they prefer.

The Canon Pixma PRO-1 is a formidable A3+ professional-grade photo printer, capable of consistently printing out exquisite, gallery-quality prints at up to 13-by-19-inch size. It does particularly well in printing out monochrome or nearly black output, as befitting its multiple black and gray ink tanks. Although a good professional-grade printer, it should also appeal to advanced amateurs who want to get the most out of their images. I can strongly recommend it for its superb output.

In our review of the Pixma Pro9500 Mark II, we lauded it for its top-notch black-and-white output, and the PRO-1 does at least as well. The PRO-1 is faster at printing than the Canon Pixma Pro9500 Mark II. It also offers larger and more ink tanks, and a lower cost per milliliter of ink than either the Pro9500 Mark II or the Editors' Choice Epson Stylus Photo R3000, though that doesn't necessarily translate directly into lower cost per page.

The R3000 is smaller, lighter, and faster than the PRO-1, has a lower price tag, and adds the ability to print from paper rolls in sizes up to 13 by 44 inches as well as WiFi connectivity and a color LCD control panel. Both printers produce exquisite, top-tier prints, and the Canon Pixma PRO-1's masterful handling of monochrome printing should make it attractive to professionals and photo enthusiasts alike.
