The gathering began under a threat from tropical storm Isaac and ended in the blazing Tampa heat. Expected massive protests by anarchists and the Occupy Movement never materialized ? perhaps in part because of an overwhelming contingent of police and security officials.

Security around the Tampa Bay Times Forum often resembled a military outpost with an eight-foot-high steel fence and concrete barriers patrolled by Florida National Guard troops armed with assault rifles. Reporters lugging their gear the half-mile through the security zone in the intense heat and humidity were funneled into two checkpoints with TSA specialists, medal detectors, and X-ray machines. ??

Even well within the convention site, reporters were continually asked to show their convention credentials.

The real action took place inside the forum on the convention floor. That?s where Monitor correspondent Warren Richey spent most of his time ? with cameras at the ready.

What unfolded represented a new level of political wackiness. Any item of clothing that could possibly support an American flag or elephant theme was on full display among the delegates and other convention participants. Lady Liberty made an appearance all the way from Long Beach, Calif., in a Colonial gown with a flag theme. A Kansas Jayhawk patrolled the floor, as did an Abe Lincoln look-alike who doubled as a delegate from Missouri.

After LA landing, Endeavour has one last journey

The space shuttle Endeavour has touched down for the last time, but its travels aren't over just yet.

Endeavour currently sits at Los Angeles International Airport, where it landed Friday atop a modified Boeing 747 jet after a three-day farewell tour that first took off from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The shuttle will live out the rest of its days here in the City of Angels, but it's still 12 miles from its final destination, the California Science Center.

And they will not be easy miles. To reach its museum retirement home, Endeavour will chug down surface streets through the heart of Los Angeles at 2 mph or less ? a far cry from the space plane's 17,500 mph orbital speed.

The home stretch of Endeavour's final journey begins Oct. 12, when four computer-controlled transport vehicles will roll the shuttle out of its airport hangar. The orbiter is slated to arrive at the California Science Center the next day. [ Photos: Shuttle Endeavour's California Flyover Tour ]

Museum officials have been planning out this trek since shortly after NASA awarded them Endeavour in April 2011. The science center could draw little guidance from history, for the shuttle's street parade will be unprecedented.

"There's nothing that big that's been moved through the center of a city before," Marty Fabrick, who is? managing Endeavour's move for the science center, told SPACE.com. "So there really was no playbook."

The space shuttle is too wide (78 feet, or 24 meters) and too tall (58 feet, or 18 m) to cruise unobtrusively down LA's streets like your average SUV. So the museum has been working with city and utilities personnel to remove obstacles along Endeavour's path, Fabrick said.

Some of these obstructions ? such as street lights and power lines ? will be put back shortly after the shuttle passes by.

"It's a very choreographed operation," Fabrick said. "Literally, there will be hundreds if not thousands of people on the route doing all this work while we're moving Endeavour."

After the shuttle arrives at the science center on Oct. 13, the museum will spend about two weeks touching up the orbiter and its exhibit. Endeavour, which flew 25 space missions between 1992 and 2011, is slated to go on display Oct. 30.

But even that date won't mark the end of Endeavour's journey. The California Science Center is still working out details of the shuttle's permanent exhibit, which will showcase Endeavour in a vertical position as if ready to launch, flanked by the external tank and solid rocket boosters that helped get it off the ground.

The final exhibit should be all ready to go within five years or so, said California Science Center president and CEO Jeffrey Rudolph.

"It's going to be so awesome," Rudolph told SPACE.com. "I think that moment when you see the whole full stack ? it's sort of jaw-dropping. People are just going to go, 'Wow!'"

Switch to Lumia? - Know Your Cell

With the iPhone 5 coming out tomorrow, the competition has its knives out. Samsung is already taking its shots?and now Nokia is showing off why it thinks the Lumia 920 is better than the latest Apple smartphone.?

I think Nokia is also doing a good job of pointing out the differences between the iPhone 5 and the Lumia 920 in the infographic below. I don't think this will impact the sales of the iPhone 5, but it's a good way for Nokia to get out its message.?

Nokia is saying that it will have a better camera, screen and included accessories than the iPhone 5 and that's probably true to a certain extent. Despite the silly fake ads it released, the Lumia 920?will have an 8.7-megapixel camera with PureView technology that could produce better low-light shots than the iPhone 5. We'll have to compare the two for ourselves to really decide, though.?

The Lumia 920 will also have a 4.5-inch display and that will be larger and have a higher resolution than the 4-inch screen on the iPhone 5. You may prefer the more pixels per inch on the iPhone 5's Retina Display, but the Lumia 920 will also be able to recognize touch inputs, even if you're wearing gloves or tapping on it with your nail. That's a very small but potentially very cool advantage.?

The Nokia Lumia 920 will also have wireless charging, which is something the iPhone 5 lacks. I do think Nokia is barking up the wrong tree by touting accessories, though, because even though the iPhone 5 will have the new Lightning port, I'm sure that we'll see a wave of accessories for it in the not-too-distant future.?

LONDON (AP) -Darren Fletcher was given a standing ovation by the Manchester United crowd and big pat on the back by manager Alex Ferguson after making his return to first-team action following 10 months out with a career-threatening bowel condition.

The Scotland midfielder replaced Paul Scholes to play in the final 11 minutes of United's 1-0 victory over Galatasaray in the Champions League on Wednesday.

His last match was a 2-2 draw with Benfica in the same competition in November, since when he took an extended break because of ulcerative colitis - a chronic inflammation of the digestive tract.

Ferguson says "I think the supporters recognize what a difficult time the lad's had. ... Taking into consideration it was his first game for 10 months, I think he acquitted himself very well."

Swedish, Danish magazines publish Kate topless photos

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - A Swedish celebrity gossip magazine published topless photographs of the wife of Britain's Prince William, the former Kate Middleton, on Wednesday and a Danish sister journal is to follow suit on Thursday.

The pictures were published despite a decision by a French court on Tuesday to ban gossip magazine Closer from further publishing the photographs and ordering it to hand the pictures over to the royal couple.

The injunction granted to the Duke and the Duchess of Cambridge, as the couple are formally known, also prevents Closer from selling the pictures to other media.

But Carina Lofkvist said her magazine, "Se och Hor" (See and Hear), had bought the pictures on Friday. The magazine published 11 pictures of the royal couple on holiday, of which four show the duchess topless.

"They are very cute pictures of a loving relationship," Lofkvist told Reuters.

She said the magazine decided to publish the pictures because they were not in any way obscene and it had in the past published similar pictures of celebrities.

The pictures were taken while the couple were on holiday in a chateau in southern France and show the duchess slipping off her bikini top, relaxing on a sun lounger and at one point pulling down the back of her bikini bottoms.

Buckingham Palace has called the photo spread a "grotesque" invasion of the couple's privacy.

Lofkvist said the couple had to be aware they could be photographed if they showed themselves in a place open to public view, adding the fact these pictures were of a royal couple was also neither here nor there.

The Danish equivalent of her magazine, "Se og Hor", owned by the same Danish media company, are to publish pictures of the duchess on Thursday.

"It is in the DNA of 'Se og Hor' that we shall entertain and satisfy our readers' curiosity," editor-in-chief Kim Henningsen said in a statement on the weekly's website.

Neither the Swedish nor Danish magazine are to publish the pictures electronically.

On Monday, the publisher of tabloid The Irish Daily Star suspended its editor after the newspaper broke ranks with Irish and British peers, publishing pages from Closer with the photographs in its Saturday edition.

Italian gossip magazine Chi, also published by Closer's owner Mondadori, printed a 26-page special edition dedicated to the pictures on Monday.

In protests, Mao holds subtle messages for Beijing

BEIJING (AP) ? Revolutionary leader Mao Zedong was the rallying icon of nationalism in the latest round of anti-Japanese protests in China. But he also provided a safe cover for criticism.

Some protesters say the portraits of Mao they carried were intended to contrast with today's China. They say the government appears "spineless" in its dispute with Japan over some islands in East China Sea.

A recent purchase by Tokyo of the islands has stirred up anti-Japanese sentiments among Chinese and set off protests across the country.

Beneath the scenes of the protests ran an undercurrent of grievances. Protesters held up signs on broader social issues such as lack of free speech, corruption, food safety, income inequality, and even the brutality of city code enforcers.

It's a fun and easy do it yourself project...Play around with colors to make one that's unique and totally yours! **Things you will need: Canvas Crayons Hot glue gun Hair dryer Optional: Acrylic paint for canvas I used an 18x24 canvas, and I used a 64 pack of crayons, and the bright colors out of a 48 pack. In total, to reach from one end of the canvas to the other, it takes 69 crayons (hey now...).
