The Daily Activist | Animal Rights | Checking Out Exotic Pet Owners

Animal Rights ? You may remember the horrible story from October 2011, where an exotic pet owner in Ohio let his animals free and then took his own life. The scene ended with authorities killing 48 animals, including an endangered Bengal tiger. Well, this past Thursday saw the entry of a new bill for Ohio legislation involving exotic animal ownership. The premise is simple: you can only own exotic animals if you can pass a background check.

State Senator Troy Balderson says that he carefully crafted this bill to balance both people?s rights within Ohio, and the protection of Ohio?s residents. He stated that ?[t]he animals didn?t get out, they were let out,? and he also said that the suicidal owner of those 48 animals from October would not have passed the background check.

?There are good people out there that do this [...] I don?t want to have a knee-jerk reaction, and overreact to something that happened that was very unfortunate.?

The law doesn?t go into affect until 2014, giving current owners plenty of time to request a permit and pass the background check. On top of the background check, the legilation propses heightened security and ?caretaking procedures? for the properties caring for exotic animals.

As it stands, ?Ohio has some of the nation?s weakest restrictions on exotic pets.? This may be why Balderson is gaining some support with his legislation. Recently, both the Govenor and the Columbus Zoo have announced their support for this new law.
